The Borough of Cresskill is a beautiful town that is just over 2 square miles. It is about 10 miles from Manhattan, which can be reached by several buses. The quaint downtown consists of shops, restaurants, banks, a public library, and the Borough Hall.
Cresskill has a long in rich history, initially inhabited by Lenape Indians, settled by Dutch trappers and traders in 1643, and incorporated in 1894. The town also bears significance in American military history, as the site of British raids during the Revolutionary War, and Camp Merritt during the First World War. A tall granite obelisk that stands in the center of Camp Merritt Memorial Circle honors fallen soldiers.
Following the Second World War, Cresskill became the new home to many servicemen and their growing families. Anxious to raise their children in a small suburban town, they settled here and became involved in the schools and community. Cresskill remains an involved community, with a full-time police department, a volunteer fire department and ambulance corps.
Cresskill prides itself with an excellent school system with an outstanding curriculum as well as before and after-school programs. The school system consists of two elementary schools, Edward H. Bryan and Merritt Memorial, and a junior-senior high school, Cresskill High School.
Recreation programs in Cresskill include baseball, football, tennis, karate, summer recreation, and many other activities. The Recreation Committee sponsors holiday celebrations and events throughout the summer.
